What cold chain traceability needs to answer
When something goes wrong, a food or pharmaceutical business needs to answer quickly:
- Which batch is affected, and where did it come from?
- Where has it been — which cold store, which vehicle, which distribution centre?
- How long did it spend at each stage?
- Where is it now, and which customers received it?
The faster these questions can be answered, the smaller and cheaper a recall becomes. A business that can trace a problem to three pallets does not have to pull an entire week’s production.
How RFID helps
Automated handling records. Readers at cold store entrances, dispatch bays, and loading points record each movement of a tagged pallet or crate without anyone stopping to scan it. In a cold store, where staff work in protective clothing and want to spend as little time inside as possible, that matters.
Bulk reading. Because RFID does not need line-of-sight, a whole pallet can be verified at once. Frost, condensation, and shrink-wrap that make barcodes difficult to read are much less of a problem.
First-expiry, first-out. Accurate location and age data make it easier to dispatch the oldest stock first, which is one of the most direct ways to reduce waste of perishables.
Returnable containers. Insulated boxes, reefer crates, and reusable totes are expensive. Tracking them reduces losses in the same way it does for any returnable transport item.
Tagging in cold and wet environments
Cold chain is a harder environment for RFID than a dry warehouse, and tag selection needs care.
- Temperature rating. Every tag and adhesive has a rated operating range. A label that works at room temperature can lose adhesion or crack in a freezer, so check the rating against the coldest point in your chain.
- Moisture and condensation. Products moved between cold and ambient areas gather condensation. Tags should be sealed or rated for wet conditions.
- Liquids and dense product. Water absorbs UHF radio energy, so tags placed directly against water-rich food or beverages may read poorly. - Washdown. Reusable crates that are washed between uses need durable, sealed hard tags.
Adding temperature data
Standard passive RFID tags identify items — they do not measure temperature. Cold chain monitoring therefore usually combines identification with separate temperature data from data loggers or sensors in the cold store and vehicle.
Linking the two is what creates real traceability. When the system knows which pallet was in which cold room or vehicle and when, it can match that record to the temperature log for the same location and period. That shows not just where a product has been, but whether it stayed within range the whole time.
Sensor-enabled RFID tags that record temperature do exist for applications that need item-level monitoring, but they cost more than standard tags and are usually reserved for high-value or high-risk products.
